DARE YOU TO TRIVIA 

Domestic Animal Rescue and Education (DARE) Inc, a non-profit charity committed to rescuing animals from death row, is hosting a trivia night on Saturday, 11 May at Kedron-Wavell. Participants will have the opportunity to win a variety of prizes in the raffle and compete to be crowned the champion table. Teams can consist of up to eight people, with all proceeds going towards saving dogs in need.

QUOTA CLUB FASHION PARADE

The Quota Club of Sandgate is hosting a fashion parade on Saturday, 1 June at 12pm at St Dympna’s Parish, John O’Callaghan Centre in Aspley. The event will showcase fashions provided by Portofino.
Tickets are $28 and include a light lunch and the chance to win a lucky door prize.

FREE OUTDOOR CINEMA IN THE SUBURBS

Residents of Marchant Ward are encouraged to attend the free Outdoor Cinemas in the Suburbs event on Saturday, 4 May. Hosted by Councillor Danita Parry and Brisbane City Council, the event will feature a screening of the film Wonka at the Grange Social Bowls Club on Sellheim Street in Grange. Festivities will kick off at 4pm, with performances by the Brisbane Brass Band, face painting, and food trucks, and the movie screening at 6pm.

WALK FOR AUTISM THIS MONTH

Aspect (Autism Spectrum Australia) is encouraging people to walk 7k steps a day this May in support of the 70% of autistic people who experience mental health issues. Participants can walk solo or in a team with friends, workmates, family or school friends. Every dollar raised supports Aspect’s work in creating an inclusive, autism-friendly world.

NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME

Celebrate the 24th year of National Simultaneous Storytime, an event where a picture book created by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously in libraries, homes, bookshops and schools. This year’s book is Bowerbird Blues by Aura Parker, ideal for children between three and five years old. On Wednesday, 22 May dress in blue and attend this free event at one of your local libraries, including Chermside Library and Zillmere Library, from 12pm to 12.30pm.

BANDS IN PARKS – DANCE! DANCE! DANCE!

Brisbane Symphonic Band is presenting a repertoire of dance at 7th Brigade Park in Chermside on Saturday, 11 May, hosted by Brisbane City Council. The free event takes place between 2pm and 3pm and will feature rustic peasant dances, a Strauss Waltz, a Scottish fling, and a Handel sarabande, as well as pop hits from ABBA and Lady Gaga.

WINTER FLAVOURS WITH ALISON ALEXANDER AT CHERMSIDE LIBRARY

ABC Radio food presenter Alison Alexander will be hosting a free winter comfort food workshop on Wednesday, 22 May from 1pm to 3pm. Alison will be sharing recipes for meat dishes and hearty soups, and tips for using local seasonal vegetables. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to learn from a seasoned expert in the culinary world.

DANCE THE NIGHT AT NOCHELLA

If you can’t make it overseas to Coachella then Royal Quarters at Nundah has the next best thing – NOCHELLA 2024. On Saturday, 11 May the indie dance festival will celebrate the artists who have played Coachella since the beginning, with live bands and DJs kicking off at 8pm with hits from The Killers, Billie Eilish, Harry Styles, AC/DC, Foo Fighters and more. Sahara DJs will close the night playing dance music greats by Daft Punk, Fatboy Slim, The Prodigy, Calvin Harris, Basement Jaxx, Flume, and Doja Cat.

PICK UP A COFFEE IN YOUR LOCAL PARK

Brisbane residents can now enjoy their morning coffee or indulge in an ice cream treat in their local park, thanks to the new Coffee Carts in Parks plan by Brisbane City Council. Several local parks have been identified, including 7th Brigade Park and Bradbury Park in Chermside, Shaw Estate Park in Wavell Heights, Shand Street Park in Stafford, and Albert Bishop Park in Nundah. Mobile food businesses and coffee cart operators can now apply to operate in one of these approved locations during designated time slots. 

TELECOMMUNICATIONS CONSUMER RIGHTS

Australian Independent Retirees (A.I.R.) Ltd – Brisbane North Branch, is extending an invitation to interested members of the northside community to attend a special Speaker’s Event presented by the Australian Communication Consumers Action Network (ACCAN). ACCAN is the peak not-for-profit advocacy group for Australian communications consumers. The event is on Thursday 20 June at Geebung RSL at 10 am. Content to be covered includes an overview of consumer support activities with a focus on the rights of telecommunication consumers. Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in a short Q&A session.
