City Orchestra Returns With  Proms Concert
Music lovers rejoice – the stirring anthems of the Brisbane City Pops Orchestra are set to fill St Paschal Baylon Catholic Church again.

This month Our Lady of the Angels Parish will welcome the popular orchestra back to perform Come to the Proms, a concert with a program full of well-known music.

Brisbane City Pops Orchestra’s vice president and events coordinator Rita West said the concerts had been held annually at the church at Wavell Heights since 2014, but had been cancelled the past two years due to COVID.

“We are looking forward to performing at St Paschal Baylon Catholic Church with its outstanding acoustics and peaceful atmosphere, however this will be a rousing concert that we hope will delight our audience,” Rita said.

“In keeping with Proms Concerts two popular pieces, Pomp and Circumstance and Radetzky March will be played, and on a lighter note March of the Gladiators, Mission Impossible and Misty will be among a number of popular pieces that promise to satisfy our audience.”

Rita said the orchestra’s artistic committee had chosen the repertoire.

“The artistic committee have all been members for many years so we know exactly the type of music our audience wish to hear,” she said.

The orchestra will be conducted by Neil Flottman, who has conducted thirteen seasons for the Queensland Ballet and worked as chorus master for the Lyric Opera of Queensland, the Australian Opera and the Canadian Opera Company.

Our Lady of the Angels School Choir, conducted by Debra Todhunter, are set to delight audiences with their singing.

Rita said the orchestra was founded in 1973, with audiences following them in increasing numbers over the years.

“We try to provide variety and a sense of fun which is unique,” she said. “Our repertoire consists of popular music and light familiar classics. The orchestra is made up of people from all walks of life, united by their love of entertaining, music and song. A number of our members are ex-professional musicians.

“I am happy to say that I have been a playing member with the orchestra for 46 years. I am very passionate about our wonderful group of people and consider them to be my second family.”

Tickets are $35pp and include a light supper. Book at www.olaparishchermside.org....
