Volunteers Get Bowls Rolling For Young And Old

People of all ages are taking to the green at the Northern Suburbs Bowls Club, and its ongoing success is all down to its hard-working volunteers.

While its Friday Fun Nights may be pausing for the winter months, the club still has plenty of fun activities to offer all year round.

Ladies vice president Di MacDonald said that the club was a great place to celebrate 18th and 21st birthday functions with a game of barefoot bowls.

Private groups can book out the green for parties, and they can either cook their own barbecue or we can organise catering,� Di said.�

Barefoot bowls is a game for all ages. An 11-year-old could play with a 69-year-old and it could be competitive. The top bowlers in Australia are younger people. It's all about having a go at something new in a social setting.�

The Northern Suburbs Bowl Club is an amalgamation of the former Wavell Heights and Clayfield Bowls Clubs and is run entirely by volunteers.�

Di said the club had recently celebrated the contribution made by its volunteers, with Leo Giddens and Lois Bay in particular both receiving a Certificate of Meritorious Award.

Leo has been a coach for many, many years and continues to coach new players, barefoot bowlers and students from Kedron and Wavell Heights High Schools,� Di said.

Lois has been president three times and is currently the secretary/treasurer of our club. She has organised and overseen an incredible number of events for our club, which have been both financially and socially successful.

At this vibrant club there are many, many volunteers, some less physically able than they were, but still coming to contribute, and we recognise them along with the continuing and new volunteers.�

Di said the club promoted a sense of community and encouraged the use of its facilities by members of the community.

The hall, kitchen, barefoot bowls and outside bar area are enjoyed by a wide range of users including families, high school students, business groups, private groups, and parties,� she said.

Members of the public are often invited to barefoot bowls open days throughout the year.
