Discover All That Glitters At Gem Show
With colourful displays of precious gems, opals, crystals, and polished stone, there is a lot to take a shine to at this month's Gem Show.

The annual Gunyah Lapidary Club Gem Show returns to Wavell Heights after being cancelled last year due to COVID restrictions.

Club secretary Philip Rowland said many types of specimens would be on display at this year's show, including cut and polished slabs of stone and rock specimens, petrified wood pieces, fossils, thunder-eggs, agates, and gemstones.

Some of the most impressive specimens are a rare specimen of Painted Lady opal, beautifully polished pieces of petrified wood, slices of colourful agate, and faceted gems, Philip said.

The best part about attending the show is seeing interesting objects and learning that some of the rocks and pieces on display can be found on a day's outing in and around Brisbane.

Gem lovers will be dazzled by the specimens available for purchase. Philip said there would be a huge range for sale at reasonable prices.

There will be slabs of rock and wood for further shaping and polishing, jewellery in the form of polished stone pendants, earrings and necklaces, silver work, faceted gems, and mineral species, he said.

A lucky dip stall has been planned especially for the kids to enjoy, as well as a sausage sizzle and refreshments.

Philip said up to 200 people were expected to attend the show.

These shows are an important source of revenue for clubs who have stalls at these shows and for club members wßho may run their own stall, he said.

The Gunyah Lapidary Club was formed in 1960 and is now one of five lapidary clubs operating in the Brisbane area.

Club members work with pieces either collected on field trips to gem fields or local fossicking areas, or purchased at gem shows held at the many clubs in and around south-east Queensland, Philip said.

The club is open Wednesdays, Friday nights, and the first and third Saturdays of the month. All are welcome to become a member.

Entry to the Gem Show is by gold coin donation.
